Climate

Gonzales wildflowersThe Gonzales area climate and land have long been conducive to cattle ranching and other types of agricultural endeavors, featuring subtropical moist climate with tropical-storm possibilities from June through October.. The annual average temperature is 67; the monthly average high temperature in January is 57 and in July is 92. The monthly average low temperatures are 41 in January and 73 in July, while  average highs ithrough the summers hover in the 90s while average lows in the winter dip to the high 30s and low 40s.  The annual average rainfall is 32.7 inches and 0 is the average snowfall. Gonzales County covers 1,068 square miles and is located east of San Antonio, south of Austin and West of Houston on U.S. Alternate 90, U.S. 183 and 87 in the Blackland Prairies Region of Texas. Gonzales is the county seat and the elevation is 292 feet above sea level. The northwestern and southern parts of the county are nearly level or undulating land featuring loamy soils with clayey subsoils. On the north, northwestern and southeastern borders are vegetation of the Post Oak Savannah type, featuring tall grass, post and blackjack oaks, while the rest of the county has more of the Blackland Prairies vegetation with tall grasses, mesquite and other scrubby deciduous trees. 

The growing season is approximately 276 days per year, with the last freeze usually the end of February and the first freeze early in December. On average, the sun shines 68 percent of daylight hours in Gonzales County.

Agricultural products include broilers, hens, eggs, cattle, hogs, corn, grain, hay, pecans, mushrooms and cactus. 

Clay, sand, gravel, oil and gas are among the minerals produced in the area.
